Baseball Scores Five in Seventh for 9-5 Win at Bucknell

The Canisius College baseball team scored eight consecutive runs, including five in the seventh, to pick up a 9-5 victory at Bucknell on Friday. The Golden Griffins (8-9) have now won five of their last seven games.

Four Golden Griffins had two hits in the game with Shayne Willson, Perry Silverman and Branson Joseph each recording two hits and two RBIs. Joseph and Silverman also scored two runs while Kevin Mahoney was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.

Bucknell (6-10) scored four runs in the third with just one hit. Canisius starter Mike Goemans loaded the bases with a walk and by hitting two Bucknell batters. Ben Yoder had an RBI single while Andrew Brouse had a sacrifice fly. An error by Kevin Mailloux led to two unearned runs being scored and made the score 4-0.

Willson had an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1 while Bucknell regained its four-run lead on an RBI single Andrew Loucks.

Canisius cut the lead in half in the sixth on a two-run homer from Mahoney, his sixth homer of the season. The Griffs then took the lead in the seventh with a five-run inning on four hits and three Bucknell errors.

Steve McQuail started the rally with a single and Ian Choy reached on an error. Connor Burke laid down a sacrifice bunt and loaded the bases on the second Bucknell error of the inning. Joseph singled to right, scoring two runs to tie the game at 5-5. Silverman followed with a two-run triple to give Canisius its first lead of the game at 7-5. Mailloux extended the Canisius lead to 8-5 with an RBI single to right.

The Griffs scored an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI double from Willson.

Goemans (2-1) went eight innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits while walking three and striking out three. Ryan McGorman pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Canisius and Bucknell continue the four-game series on Saturday, with a doubleheader that is set to begin at 12 p.m.
