Baseball Loses at VCU

The Canisius College baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end in a 12-2 loss at Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday.

VCU jumped on the Griffs from the start with a six-run first inning. The big hits in the inning for the Rams came on a two-run homer by Joe Van Meter and a two-run double from Richard Gonzalez as VCU sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.

The Rams pushed their lead to 9-0 with two runs in the second and one run in the third. VCU took advantage of five walks by Canisius starter Josh Marshall (2-1) in the second and two more in the third to take the nine-run lead.

Canisius (6-8) scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Brian Gibbs led off the fourth with a walk, Kevin Mahoney singled to right to put runners on the corners. Kevin Mailloux, who extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a second-inning single, walked to load the bases. VCU reliever Phillip Deane got Shayne Willson to ground into a double play while Gibbs scored.

In the sixth, Gibbs drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. After a Mahoney walk, Gibbs scored on a Mailloux groundout.

Freshman Alek Brown relieved Marshall and went five innings, allowing three runs, three hits, five walks and striking out six. Marshall took the loss by allowing nine runs on seven hits and seven walks in his three innings of work.

Canisius continues its Spring Break trip on Wednesday, taking on Virginia. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
