Baseball Rallies with Six-Run Ninth to Defeat Morehead State

The Canisius College baseball team scored six runs in the ninth inning to rally for a 13-10 victory at Morehead State on Monday. The Golden Griffins (6-7) have won three straight and four of their last five games.

Senior Brian Gibbs led Canisius with three hits while Kevin Mailloux, Shayne Willson and Branson Joseph each had two hits. Mailloux and Willson each had two homers and three RBIs in the game as the duo combined to score seven of the team's 13 runs.

Canisius jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Steve McQuail hit a one-out, solo homer and Mailloux followed Kevin Mahoney getting hit by pitch with a two-run homer. Morehead State made it 3-2 in the bottom of the second.

Gibbs had an RBI double in the third while Willson had a solo homer in the fifth to make it 5-2. Morehead State then scored eight consecutive runs, getting two in the fifth and six in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead.

Canisius cut into the lead with two runs in the seventh when Mailloux had a solo homer and Gibbs had an RBI single that made the score 10-7.

The Griffs then scored six in the ninth, getting those six runs on just two hits. Mailloux led off with a walk and scored on a two-run homer from Willson. Paul Panik walked and pinch runner Perry Silverman moved to third on a single by Gibbs. Silverman scored when Ian Choy reached on an error. An intentional walk to Connor Burke loaded the bases and Joseph drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 11-10. McQuail then reached on an error, scoring Choy. Mahoney was hit by a pitch to score Burke and make the score 13-10.

Willson picked up the win, retiring all six batters he faced upon entering the game in the eighth inning. Nathan Linseman started for the Griffs and went 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out one. Aaron Boag allowed eight runs, six earned, in 3.1 innings of relief while freshman Ryan Fennell pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Canisius plays at Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday, with game time set for 6 p.m.

Notes: Mailloux extended his hitting streak to 19 games... Willson has a homer in four straight games and five home runs in those four games... Canisius has 22 home runs in the last six games... The Griffs rallied from a ninth-inning deficit in a road game for the first time since April 2, 2008 at Mercyhurst... The three hits for Gibbs tied a career high, as the senior last had three hits against Buffalo May 2, 2007... Willson has at least one hit, run scored and RBI in the last six games.
