Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Morehead State



Canisius jumped out to a big lead in both games, scoring insurance runs in the firth game and getting the game-winning runs in the sixth of the nightcap for a doubleheader sweep at Morehead State on Sunday. The Golden Griffins (5-7) won 10-8 and 6-4 against the Eagles.

In the first game, Kevin Mahoney got Canisius on the board in the first with a home run, his fifth of the season. Morehead State responded in the bottom of the first, getting three runs off Canisius starter Alex MacKenzie. The Eagles had back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 lead and extended the lead to 3-1 on a single by Michael Fear.

Canisius took the lead with a six-run second inning when the Griffs sent 10 batters to the plate. Shayne Willson started the scoring with a leadoff homer. Brian Gibbs was hit by a pitch and a single by Paul Panik put runners at the corners. Connor Burke scored Gibbs to tie the game at 3-3. Alec Cabello laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third and Branson Joseph brought Panik home with a ground out. The inning continued when Perry Silverman reached on an error, that scored Burke. After a single by Mahoney put runners at first and second, Kevin Mailloux doubled both runners home to make it 7-3.

Morehead State made it a one-run game in the fifth, getting a two-run homer from Drew Lee and a solo shot from Taylor Davis.

The Griffs scored three insurance runs in the seventh as Mailloux and Willson reached with one-out singles. Gibbs brought both home with a triple, and pinch runner Will Chomicki scored on a single from Panik to make it 10-6.

Andrew Deeds cut the Canisius lead in half in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, two-run homer, but MacKenzie retired Fear to end the game.

MacKenzie (1-1) allowed eight runs in his seven innings of work, giving up nine hits and three walks while striking out five.

In the second game, the Griffs jumped on the board with three runs in the top of the first. Gibbs reached on a one-out double and would score on a home run from Mailloux. Willson followed with a solo homer to make it 3-0. Canisius extended the lead to 4-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly from Joseph.

Morehead State tied the game with a four-run fourth. The first five Eagles reached with RBI singles from Davis and Michael Bottoms. After Canisius starter Mike Goemans recorded a strike out for the first out of the inning, Morehead State tied the game with RBI singles from Eric Banier and Travis Redmon. Goemans got out of the jam by getting JD Ashbrook to strike out and Daniel Pugh to ground out.

Canisius scored the game-winning run in the sixth when Brian Burton led off with a homer, his fifth of the season. Brad Medici was hit by a pitch and moved to second when pinch hitter Steve McQuail drew a walk. Joseph brought Medici home with a double to make it 6-4.

Matt Weber relieved Goemans and retired all six batters in faced to record his second career save. Goemans (1-1) went five innings, allowing 11 hits and four runs while walking three and striking out three.

Canisius and Morehead State conclude the four-game series on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
