Hockey Falls to Army

West Point, N.Y. ? The Canisius College hockey team lost to Army on Friday night, 4-1, in front of 2,648 fans at Tate Rink. The loss drops the Griffs to 11-11-5 on the season and 9-9-3 in Atlantic Hockey play.

“We got outworked at certain moments today,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "When we brought a sincere work ethic, we were able to build momentum and create some opportunities. When we took shifts off, they had some chances.”

Freshman Dave Kostuch scored the Griffs' lone goal of the game, while classmate Dan Morrison stopped 33 shots in net for Canisius.

The Black Knights (8-16-3, 7-11-3 Atlantic Hockey) took the early advantage, scoring 7:54 into the contest. Mike Hull scored his fourth goal of the season off a rebound from a wrap-around shot to give Army a 1-0 lead.

Army took a two-goal lead when Joey Ammon scored a short-handed goal 5:08 into the second frame. The Griffs cut the lead to one, scoring on the same power play. From behind the net, junior Josh Heidinger found Kostuch in front of the goal. The freshman then knocked the puck in for his team-leading 17th score of the season.

The Black Knights reclaimed their two-goal advantage when Mark Tilch fired a shot in from the blue line with six minutes left in the second period. Army stretched its lead to three when Eric Sefchik hammered in his eighth goal of the season with 12:16 left in the third period.

Army held a slight advantage in shots, 37-35. The Griffs converted 1-of-5 power play chances, while Army was 0-for-3 in its extra-man opportunities. Army's Jay Clark stopped 34 shots in net to earn the victory

The teams conclude the two-game series tomorrow night at Tate Rink with game time slated for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: The Griffs had their streak of scoring two goals in 21-straight games snapped. It was the longest active streak in the nation ... The loss snapped Canisius' five-game unbeaten streak on the road. It was the first loss for Canisius away from Buffalo since Nov. 22 ... Kostuch entered the game ranked first nationally among rookies with 0.62 goals per game.
