Baseball Defeats Oakland

Jumping out to a 7-1 lead, the Canisius College baseball team held on for a 9-6 victory over Oakland in a neutral-site game in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday. The game, which started at 11 a.m., was interrupted by a rain delay of 3 hours, 45 minutes.

Sophomore Steve McQuail was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while senior Kevin Mailloux was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Perry Silverman had two hits while freshman Brad Medici had two RBIs in his first collegiate start.

Canisius (2-3) scored twice in the third inning as Silverman reached on a one-out triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Mahoney followed with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Brian Burton.

The Griffs added two more in the fourth, which started with Shayne Willson walking and Steve McQuail singled to put runners at the corners. The game was then halted for the rain delay.

After the rain delay, Willson scored on a wild pitch and then Connor Burke brought McQuail home with a single.

In the bottom of the fourth, Josh Marshall (1-0) relieved Canisius starter Mike Goemans, who went three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, but left the game due to the rain delay. Marshall allowed single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and picked up his first collegiate win.

Canisius broke the game open with three runs in the fifth when Mahoney walked and Burton was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Mailloux doubled down the right field line to score Mahoney, and Willson walked to load the bases. McQuail scored Burton with a sacrifice fly and Medici singled to short to score Mailloux.

Medici added another sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make the score 8-3 before Oakland scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, to make the score 8-5.

Mailloux led off the ninth with a single and scored on a double by McQuail to give Canisius its ninth run.

Willson made his Canisius debut on the mound, throwing two perfect innings to pick up his first save as a Golden Griffin.

Canisius will play a doubleheader against Charlotte on Saturday, with Friday's game being rescheduled due to rain. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
