Gulfport, Miss. - Canisius junior Julius Coles scored 18
points, teammate Elton Frazier added 17 and the Golden Griffins locked down New
Orleans to just 30.4 percent from the field in a 63-48 win on the final day of
the Southern Miss Christmas Classic in Gulfport, Miss. The win is Canisius'
second straight and improved the team to 6-6 on the year, while the Privateers
dropped their sixth straight to fall to 5-8.
The 48 points allowed by Canisius are the fewest in a game
since Feb. 8, 1997, when the Blue and Gold defeated Fairfield 91-45 in Buffalo.
New Orleans shot just 30.4 percent from the field and turned the ball over 19
times, while the Griffs closed out their southern swing by shooting a
season-high 51.1 percent from the floor and out rebounding New Orleans by a
34-26 count.
Coles had his game-high 18 points after he went 5-for-12
from the field and 7-for-10 from the line, while Frazier, who entered the game
averaging 9.3 points per game in the team's last three outings, posted his
season-high 17 after going 8-for-10 from the floor. Tomas Vazquez-Simmons added
seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Canisius, which saw eight of 10
players on the roster score at least two points.
Canisius trailed by a score of 21-17 with 5:22 left in the
half before the Robert Goldsberry hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start a 15-0
run that put the Griffs up 32-19. Canisius shot 56.5 percent from the field in
the game's first 20 minutes and never looked back as New Orleans was not able
to cut Griffs' lead to less than seven the rest of the way.
"To come down here and play three games in three days and
walk away with two wins, that's shows a strong team effort and desire to win,"
Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We played some pretty good teams down
here the last few days, and had we shot the ball better Monday night, we could
have very easily gone 3-0. I'm proud of the effort we got, especially tonight
with some tired legs. We dug down and really keyed on the things we stressed
before the game."
Frank Turner, who scored a career-high 30 points in Tuesday's
win over Southern Miss, posted nine points, five rebounds, five assists and
three steals in the win for the Blue and Gold, while Goldsberry closed out the
night with six points and a season-high eight assists. New Orleans guard
Charles Carmouche had a team-high 16 points in the loss for the Privateers,
which dropped its sixth-straight game for the first time in 20 years.
The Griffs will return to action Dec. 30, when the team
travels to long-time rival St. Bonaventure. Tipoff in the Reilly Center is set
for 7 p.m.
