Marquette Shuts Down Women's Basketball

MILWAUKEE – Marquette broke open the game with a 23-point first-half run as the Canisius College women's basketball team lost 63-32 in the Al Maguire Center on Monday evening. The Golden Griffins have lost three straight games and see their record even at 5-5 on the season.

Junior Micayla Drysdale had nine points, making three 3-pointers in the contest. Senior Brittané Russell had eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. The nine rebounds in the game gave Russell 504 for her career, making Russell the first player in program history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals in her career.

“It's no secret that we're struggling offensively right now, and when you take good shots and they don't get in, it compounds itself,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “I need to do a better job of getting us more production on the offensive end. I felt we played hard, but that's hard to see when you don't make a lot of shots.”

Cansius took an early 3-2 lead on a 3-pointer from Drysdale but then didn't score for nearly a 13-minute stretch. Marquette (8-4) scored 23 unanswered points to go up 25-3.

The Griffs responded with a 15-2 run to close out the half, making six field goals in the opening 20 minutes — all 3-pointers. Five Griffs made a 3-pointer during the spurt, capped off by two 3-pointer from Russell to make it 27-18.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half on a 12-2 run, pushing its lead to 39-20. The Griffs came back with a 7-2 run, making the score 41-27 on two free throws from Russell, but that would be as close as Canisius trimmed the deficit the rest of the game.

Jessica Pachko had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, the only player to reach double figures in either category. Tatiyiana Morris had five points, six assists and seven steals.

Canisius concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule against New Hampshire in the Koessler Athletic Center on Monday, Dec. 28. The Golden Griffins and Wildcats will tip off at 7 p.m.
