Bowling Green Holds Off Men's Basketball

Bowling Green guard Dee Brown scored a team-high 16 points, with five of those coming from the foul line in the game's final 30 seconds, and teammate Otis Polk added 13 points and seven rebounds as the visiting Falcons defeated Canisius College 58-54 Saturday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. The win was Bowling Green's fourth straight and improved the team to 5-3 on the year, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 4-4 with the loss.

For Canisius, junior guard Julius Coles scored a game-high 17 points to go with six rebounds, while senior guard Frank Turner added 12 points and a game-high six assists. Freshman Alshwan Hymes came off the bench to chip in nine points along with a career-high seven rebounds.

Brown put Bowling Green up 55-51 with 28 seconds left in regulation time after he hit a pair of charity tosses, but the Griffs would not go away late, as junior Greg Logins cut the score to 55-54 with a 3-pointer from the corner on the Blue and Gold's ensuing possession. Canisius was forced to foul Brown on the inbounds pass, and the 6-foot-3 sophomore knocked down a pair from the line to stretch the Falcons' margin to 57-54 with 13 ticks left on the clock.

Canisius missed a chance to tie the game with seven seconds remaining when its 3-point try hit the back iron, and Brown was able to secure the rebound, where he was promptly fouled with three seconds to play. He hit one of two of his free throws at the other end to help seal the win for Bowling Green, the program's first win over Canisius in Buffalo since Jan. 30, 1965.

Bowling Green took a 34-27 into the locker room at the half on the power of an 8-0 run over the final 3:07 of the first frame. Brown hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:37 left before intermission to put Bowling Green up four, and the scoring spurt was ended with Erik Marschall's jumper from just outside the lane with 48 seconds left in the half. Bowling Green stretched its hold to eight at 36-28 in the opening moments of the second half, but Canisius fought back and knotted the game at 36-36 with an 8-0 run, highlighted by three points from Coles, a 3-pointer by Hymes and a pair of free-throws by Turner. The game would remain close for the rest of the contest, but the Falcons were able to distance themselves at 47-40 with an 8-0 run over 3:42, capped by a traditional three-point play by Polk.

"I thought that game was exactly what we expected, a possession by possession battle for 40 minutes against a big, physical team," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "They like to pack into that 2-3 zone and make you shot over the top to score points. In the second half, I thought we did a decent job of moving the basketball in transition, we just have to make shots. Give them credit, they did a good job of keeping us at bay with their size and it made it hard for us to get the clean defensive rebounds that allow us to get out and run."

Canisius shot 30.8 percent from the field, 29.2 percent from 3-point range and 78.9 percent from the foul line, while the Falcons shot 40 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from behind the arc and 56.3 percent from the line. Bowling Green outscored Canisius 24-16 in the paint, with Canisius holding a 10-2 advantage on fast-break points.

The Griffs will return to action Wednesday, Dec. 16, when the team travels to Duquesne. Tipoff in Pittsburgh, Pa., is set for 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes: Bowling Green's win snapped Canisius' two-game winning streak in the series and gives the Falcons a 9-5 lead all-time... Turner extended his double-digit scoring streak to 27-straight games, which is the seventh-longest streak of its kind at the Division I level... Hymes' nine points matches his previous career-high, set opening night at Loyola-Chicago... Logins added eight rebounds to the Griffs' losing effort...  Juniors Tomas Vazquez-Simmons and Robert Goldsberry were in the starting line-up for the first time this season.
