Men's Basketball Falls at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan forward Jay Higgins scored 25 points and teammate Brandon Bowdry added 18 points and eight rebounds as the host Eagles defeated Canisius 75-58 Monday night in front of 423 at the Convocation Center. The win improved Eastern Michigan to 5-2 on the year, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 3-2 with the loss.

For Canisius, junior Greg Logins scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the loss. Senior Frank Turner chipped in 12 points, while fellow junior Elton Frazier added a season-high 11 points.

Higgins scored his 25 points after he finished the night by going 10-for-17 from the field and 5-for-11 from 3-point range. Higgins led the charge that allowed Eastern Michigan to pull away, as he scored nine points in a 57-second span to push a 19-10 Eagle lead to 25-11 with 13:03 left in the first half. EMU went into the locker room at the half with a 46-25 hold after shooting 61.5 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from behind the arc in the game's first 20 minutes.

"We wanted to control their inside game and we ended up not doing a good job of protecting the 3-point line," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "I told them in the locker room after the game that we need to respond the way we did after the Loyola-Chicago loss. We also need to put this behind us, because we open league play and we need to defend our home court."

In the second half, the Griffs attempted to work their way back into the contest with a 12-4 run during a span of 5:22, capped by a traditional three-point play from Turner that made the score 62-50 with 7:11 left in the game. But from there, Higgins answered by scoring on a fastbreak off the ensuing inbounds pass to push the Eagles cushion back to 14.

The Griffs will return to action Friday, Dec. 4 when the team hosts Loyola in the MAAC opener for both teams. Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m.  All fans are encouraged to wear white as part of the "White Out" event.

Game Notes: Eastern Michigan is now 2-0 in the all-time series against Canisius... The Griffs saw their two-game winning streak over Mid-American Conference schools come to an end... Logins and Turner have posted double figures in the scoring column in all five games this year... Tomas Vaquez-Simmons had six points and two blocks... He now ranks third all-time in career blocked shots with 146.
