West Point, N.Y. - The Canisius College hockey team lost its second-straight game to Army at Tate Rink, falling by a score of 7-2. The Golden Griffins fall to 7-8-1 on the season and 6-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while Army improves to 5-8-2 and 4-5-1 against league foes.
Junior Cory Conacher scored for the fourth-straight game, while senior Jason Weeks also netted a goal for the Griffs.
Conacher got the Griffs on the scoreboard just 1:26 into the contest. After a battle in front of the goal, Army knocked away a loose puck in the crease and right to senior Carl Hudson. The senior defender then found Conacher open on the back door, who scored on the open net for his team-best 12th goal of the season.
The Black Knights quickly claimed the lead, scoring two goals on a pair of 2-on-1 rushes 63 seconds apart. Eric Sefchik found Cody Omilusik for Army's first goal at the 7:06 mark, while Owen Meyer scored off a feed from Mike Hull at the 8:09 mark.
Weeks would bring the Girffs back to even at 2-2, scoring his fourth goal of the season with 5:14 left in the first period. Freshman Torrey Lindsay had his shot blocked but quickly found the rebound and gave the puck to Weeks, who knocked it in to knot the game at two. Freshman Steven Shafer also registered an assist on the goal.
Army took control of the game with three goals in the first half of the second stanza. Andy Starczewski opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the frame, while Bryant Skarda and Sefchik added goals at 4:32 and 8:59, respectively.
The Black Knights added two third-period goals by Sefchik and Starczewski to seal the 7-2 victory.
Army outshot the Griffs, 43-33. The Black Knights were 1-for-6 on the power play, while Canisius was unsuccessful in five extra-man chances.
Sophomore Dan Morrison started the game for the Griffs and made 14 saves. Senior Andrew Loewen recorded 22 saves in relief.
Canisius returns to the ice next Friday, hosting Bentley. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is set for 7:05 p.m.
