BUFFALO, N.Y. - Canisius senior guard Frank Turner pulled
down a rebound, raced the length of the floor and floated in the game-winning
basket with 1.5 seconds left to help lift the Golden Griffins to a 73-71 win
over Buffalo Tuesday night in Alumni Arena. The win improves Canisius to 2-1 on
the year, while the Bulls slipped to 2-2 with the loss.
Junior guard Julius Coles matched a career-high 26 points in
the win for the Blue and Gold, while Turner ended the night with his fifth
career double-double after he posted 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward
Greg Logins recorded 14 points and seven rebounds for Canisius, which snapped
its five-game losing streak to Buffalo with the victory.
With the score knotted at 71-71, Buffalo had a chance to
take the lead with seven seconds left in regulation time, but Calvin Betts'
jumper from the middle of the lane bounced off the iron, where Turner was able
to jump up and pull the ball down. From there, the Atlantic City, N.J. native
raced down the floor and floated a one-hand runner over the head of a Buffalo
defender that rattled into the hoop. UB took its final timeout on Canisius'
make, but a last-second halfcourt toss hit the backboard as the horn sounded to
signify the Griffs' victory.
"This is something we've been preparing for," Canisius head
coach Tom Parrotta said. "[Buffalo] is a well-coached, physical team, and they
don't come out of their system for anyone. We made one more play than they did
tonight, and that's why this was a great college basketball game."
"A win like this shows we've grown as a team," Turner said.
"All the hard work we put in has made us 2-1, but we want to continue moving
forward. And we're playing as a confident group right now."
Canisius went into the locker room at the half down 10 at
42-32, but fought back into the game by going on a 22-3 run through the first
7:27 of the second stanza, capped by a put-back dunk by Logins with 12:33 left
in regulation time. The Bulls answered with the game's next 12 points to take a
57-54 lead with 7:10 left, but freshman Alshwan Hymes ended the Griffs' dry
spell with a steal and a traditional 3-point play with 6:23 left on the clock.
The game would remain tight down the stretch, with UB holding a five-point lead
on three occasions in the final 4:05, but Canisius was able to fight back one
last time with 90 seconds left to play.
Buffalo's lead of 71-66 was cut to 71-68 after Turner
drained two free throws. After a situation that saw the officials call a
double-foul, Canisius regained possession with the arrow in its favor, which
set up Logins' 3-pointer from the corner that knotted the game at 71-71.
Coles' 26 points came after he went 9-for-16 from the field,
4-for-7 from 3-point range and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Turner's 10
rebounds matched his career high and he also dished out a game-high six assists
in the victory. For Buffalo, Max Boudreau came off the bench to score a
team-high 15 points.
The Griffs will return to action Saturday, Nov. 28, when the
team opens the home portion of its schedule against Howard. Tipoff is set for
3:15 p.m. Tickets are still available through the Canisius ticket office, and
the athletic department announced today that the ticket office will be open on
Friday, Nov. 27, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tickets can also be bought online by
