Colorado Eagles Signs Andrew Loewen

Ice Hockey Canisius College Athletics

Hockey Blanks AIC, 4-0

West Springfield, Mass. - Strong special teams and a school-record third-consecutive shutout helped the Canisius College hockey team extend its unbeaten streak to six games, recording a 4-0 win over host American International on Saturday. With the win, the Griffs improve to 7-6-1 and 6-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.

The Griffs are now 5-0-1 in their last six games. The team's six-game unbeaten streak is their longest since also going six games without a loss during the 2003-04 season.

Senior Andrew Loewen recorded 32 saves in net to extend the Griffs' shutout streak. Canisius has not allowed a goal in its last 187:45 of play.

Junior Cory Conacher led the Griffs offense with a pair of goals, while senior Jason Weeks and sophomore Scott Moser each added a tally.

Senior Josh Heidinger also added an assist on the afternoon, breaking the program's Division I record for most career assists. The senior has now accumulated 72 career helpers, one more than David Deeves recorded from 1998 to 2002.

"The team is rolling on all cylinders right now," said senior Dave Cianfrini. "The forwards, the defenders and the goalies are all playing really well. We are sticking to our systems and it is showing in our results."

Moser got the Griffs on the scoreboard with 4:02 remaining in the first period, converting a penalty shot. The sophomore got behind the Yellow Jacket defense and was hooked down on a breakaway. On the penalty shot, Moser beat the AIC goaltender with a backhand shot up high for his second score of the season.

Canisius added three power play goals in the second period to take control of the game. Conacher got things rolling with the first two extra-man scores of the afternoon. Junior Vincent Scarsella fed his classmate from the goal line and Conacher sent a wrist shot past the AIC goaltender for his first goal of the day. Heidinger also posted his record-setting assist on the goal 1:19 into the period.

Conacher netted his second goal of the afternoon with 12:33 remaining in the second period, connecting for the second time on the power play. Senior Carl Hudson dug out the puck off the boards and gave it to Scarsella. The junior then found Conacher open back door and he knocked the puck in for the 3-0 advantage.

Weeks extended Canisius' lead to four with a power play goal of his own at the 13:05 mark. Cianfrini sent a shot in from the blue line and Weeks tipped it in for his third goal of the season. Sophomore Dave Kostuch also registered an assist on the power play score.

Loewen preserved the Griffs' third-straight shutout with seven saves in the third period and by helping kill off four AIC power plays.

"This weekend was a huge confidence builder," Hudson said. "Any time that you don't allow a goal in three-straight games, it shows that we are getting good team defense and good goaltending."

Canisius held a slight 33-32 advantage in shots. The Griffs converted three of their four power-play chances, while killing all seven Yellow Jacket extra-man opportunities. AIC's Dan Ramirez stopped 29 shots in the defeat.

The Griffs return to the ice on Friday, squaring off at Army. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
