Loyola Rambles Past Men's Basketball

CHICAGO -- Loyola (Chicago) guard Geoff McCammon scored a career-high 22 points after shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from behind the 3-point line, and four other Ramblers scored in double figures as host Loyola dropped Canisius College 89-69 Tuesday night in the Gentile Center.  Loyola improves to 1-1 with the win, while the Golden Griffins moved to 0-1 after losing the season opener.

As a team, the Ramblers shot 54.5 percent from the field, 61.1 percent from 3-point land and 78.3 percent from the free-throw line in the victory. Starters Ben Averkamp and Andy Polka posted 12 and 11 points, respectively, with Polka adding 12 rebounds for a double-double. Walt Gibler and Marcus Thomas came off the bench to add 17 and 14 points for Loyola, which ended the night by knocking down 11 3-pointers.

For Canisius, junior guard Julius Coles posted a team-high 18 points to go with six rebounds. Senior Frank Turner was good for 17 points, seven assists and three steals, while junior forward Greg Logins chipped in 11 points.

"Simply put, we didn't carry the things that we do well in practice into tonight's game," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "I believe we have a solid team. We'll get right back to work and focus on getting better. We chose to start the season with three-straight road games because we wanted to challenge our players.  Now it's time for this veteran group to put together a collective effort to be better. "

Canisius took an early 12-10 lead with 15:45 left in the first half on a layup by Turner. From there, Loyola pulled away from the Blue and Gold, using a 10-0 run over the next 2:24 to take a 20-12 lead. The Griffs would fight back just before the intermission, trailing by six at 41-35 following a traditional three-point play by Turner. Loyola answered with five points to end the first stanza and then push its lead to as many as 16 points in the opening moments of the second half with a 9-3 run, highlighted by seven points by McCammon.

The Griffs will return to action Saturday, Nov. 21, as the team travels to meet St. Francis (NY). Tip time is set for 2 p.m.
