Hockey Falls to Air Force

The Canisius College hockey team lost the finale of a two-game series against Air Force, 4-1. The loss drops the Griffs to 2-6-0 and 1-3-0 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Falcons improve to 3-5-0 and 3-1-0 against league foes.

"We had our chances and we just didn't capitalize today," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "Air Force is a good hockey team that we let come into our building and take two of our points."

Sophomore Dave Kostuch netted the Griffs' lone score of the afternoon, while sophomore Dan Morrison anchored the defense with 25 saves.

The Falcons scored two first-period goals to take the early advantage in the contest. Jacques Lamoureux tallied the first goal of the afternoon at the 12:11 mark, scoring with an extra-man advantage due to a delayed penalty. Kyle De Laurell then stretched the Falcons' advantage to two with a power play score at the 16:47 mark.

Canisius rebounded in the second period and cut the Air Force lead to one. Senior Josh Heidinger fired a shot toward goal on a power play. Freshman Preston Shupe then knocked the rebound to Kostuch, who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Falcons, however, would add two third-period goals to seal the victory. Lamoureux scored his second goal of the day 59 seconds into the third period on a power play. Scott Kozlak then tipped a shot past Morrison with 4:34 left in the game for his first goal of the season.

Canisius outshot the Falcons, 35-29, but Air Force's Andrew Volkening was solid in goal, recording 34 saves. Air Force was 2-for-6 with the extra-man advantage, while Canisius was 1-for-7 on the power play.

The Griffs continue Atlantic Hockey play next weekend, squaring off against Mercyhurst in a home-and-home series. The two teams will play in Erie on Friday at 7:05 p.m. before returning to the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.

Game Notes: The loss ended Canisius' three-game winning streak in the series ... The two teams are now deadlocked in 12 all-time meetings, 5-5-2 ... Morrison's two third-period goals allowed doubled his season total ... Shupe is now tied for first on the team with four assists.
