Baseball Completes Sweep at Saint Peter's

The Canisius College baseball team received 7.1 shutout innings from sophomore Mike Goemans and reliever Ryan McGorman retired all five batters he faced to complete the weekend sweep with a 2-0 victory over Saint Peter's at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J. on Sunday. The win allows Canisius to maintain its one-game lead over Manhattan in the MAAC standings with six games remaining.

Junior Branson Joseph led Canisius (35-10, 14-4 MAAC) with two hits while sophomore Ian Choy had the team's only RBI. Senior Ryan Asis and junior Alec Cabello scored the runs for the Golden Griffins.

Canisius got on the board in the third inning when Cabello and Asis led off with back-to-back singles. Choy brought Cabello home with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The Griffs added an insurance run in the ninth when Asis reached with one out after the first of three errors by Saint Peter's (18-26, 6-12) in the inning. Asis moved to second on a wild pitch and scored after the second error of the inning on a groundball by Kevin Mailloux.

Goemans (5-1) retired the first six batters and faced four batters or fewer in six innings. McGorman came into the game after Goemans allowed a one-out double in the eighth. The Griffs' closer induced three groundballs and recorded two strikeouts to pick up his sixth save of the season, which sets a new program record.

Canisius returns to the field next weekend with a three-game series at Fairfield. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.

Game Notes: McGorman broke the single-season saves record of Derek Zgoda, who had five during the 1994 season... Canisius shut out its opponent in back-to-back games for the first time since April 11, 1999, against Saint Peter's and shut out its opponent in consecutive road games for the first time in the last 25 years... Canisius is now 6-0 in MAAC road games this season and 26-4 in games away from home... The Griffs have won their last six games against Saint Peter's and improve to 20-16 against the Peacocks in the all-time series.
