Baseball Completes Sweep at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? Getting four hits from Ryan Asis and four RBIs each from Kevin Mahoney and Brian Burton, the Canisius College baseball team completed a three-game sweep at Fairfield with a 13-7 victory over the Stags at Alumni Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

Fairfield took the early lead by scoring three runs in the second inning off Canisius starter Mike Goemans. Canisius (38-10, 17-4 MAAC) would score all 12 of its 13 runs in the final four innings. Canisius got on the board with an RBI groundout from Alec Cabello in the fifth.

In the sixth, Canisius took the lead by scoring four runs, getting two-run homers from Mahoney and Brian Gibbs. The Griffs added three more runs in the seventh inning, getting a two-run RBI double from Mahoney and RBI single from Asis.

Fairfield (14-33, 11-10 MAAC) would score two runs in the seventh and eighth innings, making the score 8-7. With the Griffs up by one, Ryan McGorman entered and walked the first batted he faced to load the bases. McGorman would then get a groundout to end the Fairfield threat.

Canisius would put the game away with five runs in the top of the ninth. Mahoney started the inning with a single, followed by a single from Asis. Kevin Reimer doubled home Mahoney to make it 9-7. After an intentional walk to Connor Burke, freshman Brian Burton hit a grand slam to left field to give Canisius a 13-7 lead.

Canisius closes out the regular season with a three-game series at Niagara, with a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday and a single-game set for Friday.

Game Notes: Sunday's win assures Canisius of one of the top two spots in the MAAC Championship... Canisius improves to 9-0 in MAAC road games and 27-4 in games played away from home... Gibbs' homer came as he was pinch hitting for Perry Silverman and was his first of the season.
