Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Rider

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

Freshman Shane Davis threw his third consecutive complete game to give the Canisius College baseball team a split with Rider University at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday. The Broncs took the first game 7-6 in 11 innings to snap Canisius' nine-game winning streak while the Golden Griffins took the second game 6-3.

Davis allowed three runs, two earned, while yielding seven hits, walking five and striking our four to improve to 6-0 on the season. Adam Donato had two hits in the second game to give him five total hits in the doubleheader. Kevin Mahoney and Paul Panik each had two hits as well for the Griffs (21-3, 4-1 MAAC) in the nightcap.

The Griffs scored twice in the first inning to take the lead in the second game. After Donato led off with a single, Kevin Mailloux tripled to left center to bring home Donato. Ryan Asis followed with a groundout to score Mailloux and make it 2-0.

After Rider (13-12, 4-4) scored twice in the top of the second to tie the game, the Griffs took the lead for good on a RBI single by Panik. In the third, Canisius added another run on the first career home run by Brian Burton. The Griffs made it 4-2 in the fourth when Branson Joseph scored from third after Alec Cabello got caught in a rundown between first and second. Canisius closed out its scoring in the fifth inning when Mailloux was on second and Mahoney singled to the hole on the left side. The throw went out of play, bringing home Mailloux to make it 6-2.

“I didn't think we played very well today, and we were lucky to salvage a split with Rider,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. “If we want to win the series on Sunday, we need to play much better than we did today.”

Sean Olson led the Broncs to the victory in the first game, going 4-for-6 with five RBIs and hitting two home runs. James Hayes came on in relief to throw 3.1 scoreless innings to pick up the victory.

The Broncs took the lead in the first on a solo homer by Olson. Rider extended its lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Olson and Mason Heyne. Canisius responded with two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer by Donato, his fourth homer of the season.

Each team scored three runs in the fifth, with the Broncs getting their runs on a three-run homer by Olson. Canisius brought its three runs home without a hit. After Asis, Cabello and Donato singled to start the inning, Ian Choy struck out for the first out of the inning, Mailloux worked a walk to force home a run. Kevin Reimer then brought home Cabello with a sacrifice fly. Donato and Mailloux moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and Donato then scored on another wild pitch to make it 6-5.

The Griffs would tie the game in the eighth after the first two batters made outs to start the inning. Connor Burke doubled to left and Asis followed with a single to bring home Burke and make it 6-6.

The Broncs would score the winning run in the 11th. Hayes led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third. Hayes would come around to score on a wild pitch when Ryan McGorman (3-2) struck out Olson.

Alex MacKenzie went eight innings in the opener, allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits while striking out four.

Canisius and Rider complete the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
