Mailloux's Ninth-Inning Blast Leads Baseball to 7-6 Victory

Box Score

Junior Kevin Mailloux hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the ninth inning to give the Canisius College baseball team a 7-6 victory at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. on Wednesday. The win extends the Golden Griffins' winning streak to nine games, the longest in more than 20 years.

Junior Alec Cabello led Canisius (20-2) with three hits while Mailloux and Ian Choy had two hits as seven different Golden Griffins scored a run in the game.

Mailloux's blast came after Choy and Branson Joseph singled to lead off the inning with Joseph's hit ending a 0-for-20 slump. Mailloux then homered to right-center field for his fifth of the season.

Ryan McGorman (3-1) pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to record the victory for the Griffs in the second consecutive game.
Josh Sawatzky received the start for the Griffs for the second consecutive game after only going one inning in Sunday's game against Iona. Sawatzky went four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks. Freshman Josh Marshall pitched a scoreless inning of relief while Andrew Van'tWout allowed six runs, all of them unearned, in his two innings of work.

Canisius jumped out to a 4-0 lead by scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings. After Cabello singled with one out and stole second, Adam Donato brought the junior home with a single up the middle and moved to second on the throw. Donato advanced to third on a single by Choy and then scored on a passed ball.

In the fourth, Ryan Asis led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Steve McQuail. McQuail then stole second and scored on a single by Cabello to make it 4-0.

The Lakers would score four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Adam Gray led off the inning with a double. Van'tWout got the next two batters to pop out and struck out Joe Luli, but Luli reached on an error by Paul Panik. After Greg Turk was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Adam Schlessel singled to drive home one. Josh Schmidt followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 4-4.

Mercyhurst (12-12) added two more unearned runs in the eighth. Dan Bertolini reached on an error and was retired at second on a fielder's choice. After Craig Denman singled, Jamie Walczak flied out for the second out of the inning. Luli walked to load the bases and a single by Turk made it 6-4.

Canisius returns to the Demske Sports Complex for a five-game homestand, starting with a doubleheader against Rider on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
