Offense Continues Historic Output in Win at Delaware State

Box Score

The Canisius College baseball team continued to produce runs at a historic level in the 21-11 victory at Delaware State on Wednesday. The Golden Griffins (16-2) have now won five straight and 11 of their last 12.

The Griffs scored 20 or more runs in back-to-back games for the first time in school history and tallied 53 runs in the past three games, besting the previous school record of 52 runs set during the 1957 season.

For the second consecutive game, all nine Golden Griffins in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit as the Griffs had 21 as a team, giving them 44 in two-game series with the Hornets. Junior Kevin Reimer matched a school record with five hits in the game while senior Adam Donato had a career-high four hits. Canisius had five separate players score at least three runs in the game. Senior Alec Cabello set a career high with five RBIs as the shortstop, along with Connor Burke, each had a home run for the Griffs. The Griffs jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first on some unconventional methods. Donato led off the game by reaching on catcher's interference and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Reimer would single home Ryan Asis to make it 2-0. After Branson Joseph was thrown out at the plate after Kevin Mailloux flew out to center field, Reimer moved up two bases on two balks and would score on an error.

After Delaware State (4-18) scored one in the bottom of the first, each team scored four times in the second to make it 7-5. Canisius scored two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Burke and Cabello while Delaware State added one to make it 9-6.

The Griffs broke it open with six runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Burke had another RBI single in the fifth while Cabello's double to center cleared the bases. Donato singled home Cabello to make it 15-6. In the sixth, Mailloux and Perry Silverman had RBI singles while Burke drove home a run on a fielder's choice. Cabello added a sacrifice fly and Donato closed out the scoring with a two-run home run.

Sophomore Bryan Smith made his third career start, going 3.1 innings and allowing six runs. Matt Weber (2-0) relieved Smith to pick up the win by throwing 3.2 innings. Chris Cox and Andrew Van'tWout each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Canisius concludes its Spring Break road trip playing at the New York Institute of Technology on Thursday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
