Entering the week having scored 29 runs in its previous six games, the Canisius College baseball team has scored 33 runs in the last two games as the Golden Griffins defeated Delaware State 21-12 at Soldier Field in Dover, Del. on Tuesday. Canisius has now won four straight and 10 of its last 11.
Canisius (15-2) set a school record with 23 hits, as each starting position player recorded at least one hit and six had multiple hits in the game. The Griffs had nine extra-base hits against the Hornets (4-17), including five home runs, which tied the school record of five. Juniors Branson Joseph and Kevin Mahoney each hit two homers for the Griffs. Senior Adam Donato finished a double short of the cycle, going 3-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBIs. Mahoney also drove in five while senior Ryan Asis was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
After each team scored two runs in the first, the Griffs took the lead for good with two runs in the second on a two-run homer by Mahoney. Each team scored two runs in the fifth to make it 6-4.
Canisius then scored 15 consecutive runs ? getting three in the sixth, three in the seventh and nine in the eighth. Donato's three-run home run accounted for the scoring in the sixth while a RBI single by Paul Panik and two-run triple from Donato plated the runs in the seventh.
In the eighth, the Griffs sent 14 batters to the plate. After singles by Joseph and Kevin Reimer started the inning, a groundout by Brian Burton was the first out of the eighth. The next five Canisius batters reached, which included a three-run home run by Mahoney. After Choy grounded out, the next five Griffs reached base, including a two-RBI double by pinch hitter Perry Silverman. A RBI single from Asis, that scored Reimer, capped off the Canisius scoring and made it 21-4.
The Hornets would score four runs in the eighth and ninth innings, with six straight batters reaching base in the eighth and the first five batters reaching base in the ninth.
Freshman Josh Marshall received his first collegiate start and went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking eight and striking out four. Junior Aaron Boag picked up the win with 3.2 innings of relief.
Freshman Eric Hawes recorded one out in the ninth in his first collegiate action while sophomore Shane Davis retired the last two batters to finish the ninth.
Canisius and Delaware wrap up the two-game mid-week series on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
