Davis Throws Complete Game As Baseball Takes Series From Le Moyne

Box Score

Freshman Shane Davis threw his first career complete game as the Canisius College baseball team defeated Le Moyne 3-1 on Sunday afternoon, giving the Griffs the series win over the Dolphins.

Canisius (13-2) got all the runs it would need in the top of the first. Adam Donato led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and Ryan Asis doubled to left to put runners at second and third with no outs. After Branson Joseph struck out, Kevin Mailloux singled to center and drove in Donato and Asis to make it 2-0.

Each team would score a run in the fourth. The Griffs went up 3-0 on a solo home run by Paul Panik, the first home run of his career. The Dolphins (8-12) got their only run in the bottom of the inning when Mike Brown led off with a double and moved to third on a one-out single by Corey O'Neill. Brown then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sean Paino.

Davis (4-0) retired 17 of the final 20 batters in the game and threw the first nine-inning complete game by a Canisius pitcher on the road since Jeremy Dracup defeated Saint Peter's March 16, 2002. Panik was the only Griff to record two hits on the day as Donato extended his on-base streak to 13 games.

“Today wasn't one of our better defensive outputs, but we got a terrific start from Shane Davis,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. “By the end of the weekend, we showed some resiliency and toughness, two traits that we need to be successful in the MAAC.”

Canisius continues its Spring Break trip with a single game at Penn State on Monday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.

Game Notes:
The 13-2 start to the season is the best by a MAAC school in the last 12 seasons, besting the 12-3 mark by Marist during the 2000 season.... Since allowing four runs in the first inning of his first collegiate start against Long Island, Davis has allowed three earned runs in 22 1/3 innings for an ERA of 1.21... In the past seven games, Canisius has a team ERA of 1.90... The Griffs have allowed four runs or fewer in eight consecutive games... Joseph has four stolen bases in the past four games... The Griffs have won five straight series of three games or more and eight of the last nine.
