After seeing its six-game winning streak come to an end in the opener, the Canisius College baseball team responded in the second game to split a doubleheader at Le Moyne on Saturday. The Griffs fell 3-1 in the opener but won the second game 5-1.

In the first game, junior Alex MacKenzie (3-1) took the loss for Canisius (12-2), his first of the season. The righthander went six innings, giving up five hits and three runs, two earned, making it the ninth time in the last 11 starts MacKenzie has allowed two or fewer earned runs.

The Dolphins (8-11) scored twice in the third, getting a run on back-to-back doubles and then scoring later in the inning on an RBI single. Le Moyne made it 3-0 in the fourth by scoring on an error by Ian Choy after a single from Sean Paino.

The Griffs got their lone run in the fifth after freshman Brian Burton singled to start the inning. After Kevin Mahoney lined out, Ryan Asis walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. The Griffs could only get one run when Burton scored on a groundout by Alec Cabello. With two outs, Adam Donato walked but Choy grounded out to end the inning. Canisius got a runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh but couldn't capitalize.

Eric Beaulac (2-1) went six innings to pick up the win, allowing one run on three hits while walking four and striking out five. Jeff Tardiff pitched a scoreless seventh to record the save.

“I didn't think we showed up to play in the first game, but responded in game two,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. “That gave us the chance to salvage the split and put us in position to win the series on Sunday.”

Le Moyne jumped on the board in the first inning of the second game, scoring on a RBI single from Phil St. Amant.

That would be the only run of the game for the Dolphins as Mike Goemans went six innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. The sophomore allowed eight hits and walked one while Ryan McGorman pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game.

Canisius tied the game in the fourth on a home run from Kevin Mailloux, the third time in the last four games Mailloux has hit a home run.

The Griffs scored four runs in the sixth, when the first four Griffins reached base to start the inning. Branson Joseph led it off with a double and Kevin Reimer and Mailloux followed with singles, with Joseph scoring on the single from Reimer. After a walk to Burton loaded the bases, Perry Silverman grounded into a double play, with Reimer scoring to make it 2-1. After Choy, who pinch hit for Steve McQuail was intentionally walked, Mahoney came into the game to pinch run for Choy. Cabello then singled home Mailloux with a two-out single to right center and advanced Mahoney to third. The Griffs got their fourth run when Cabello scored on a double steal.

Canisius and Le Moyne play the rubber game of the three-game set on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
