Baseball Completes Sweep of Mount St. Mary's

Getting solid pitching in both games, timely hitting in game one and four home runs in game two, the Canisius College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Mount St. Mary's on Saturday in Emmitsburg, Md. The Griffs took game one 4-2 before winning the second game 12-4. The 11 wins give Canisius as many or more victories than the team totaled in five of the previous eight seasons.

In game one, Canisius (11-1) got on the board in the second on a sacrifice fly by Adam Donato, which scored Brian Gibbs. Canisius extended its lead with two runs in the third as Kevin Reimer, Kevin Mailloux and Gibbs strung together consecutive one-out singles, with Gibbs' hit scoring Reimer. After a strikeout by Connor Burke, Steve McQuail singled home Mailloux to make it 3-0.

Mount St. Mary's (0-11) responded with single runs in the fourth and sixth inning, to make it 3-2 heading into the seventh. The Griffs tacked on an insurance run on a home run by Mailloux. Freshman Shane Davis (3-0) went six innings, allowing eight hits, two runs, one walk to pick up his third win of the season. Ryan McGorman picked up his third save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth.

“Our team continued to play well today,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. We got more solid pitching from our staff and had timely hitting and production from our lineup. It's great to continue this strong start to 2008.”

Branson Joseph led the Griffs with two home runs and five RBIs in the second game of the day, as Canisius posted 12 runs on 11 hits.
The Griffs scored the first four runs of the game, getting two in the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth. Joseph hit a two-run shot in the third to get Canisius on the board. In the fourth, Alec Cabello singled through the right side so score Mahoney. The Griffs made it 4-0 when Donato scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

Mount St. Mary's cut it to 4-3 with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. Canisius then broke it open with three in the seventh and four in the eighth. Canisius got the three runs in the seventh on one hit as Ian Choy scored when Mailloux reached on an error. Mailloux then scored when Ryan Asis reached on an error and Asis scored when Mahoney reached on a fielder's choice.

The Griffs then scored the rest of their runs on home runs as Joseph hit a three-run shot, which was followed by a solo shot from Mailloux in the eighth. Mahoney added a solo home run in the ninth.

Senior Josh Sawatzky (2-0) picked up the win by going five innings and allowing two hits, one run, two walks and striking out four. Andrew Van'tWout pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and went 2.1 innings, allowing one run. Chris Cox yielded three hits but pitched a scoreless ninth.

Canisius returns to the field for a doubleheader on Tuesday, playing a twinbill at West Virginia.

Joseph had a three-HR, six-RBI performance in the team's final game of the 2006 season... The junior was 5-for-14 on the weekend with four extra-base hits and slugged 1.071... On the weekend, Canisius hit .348 and had an on-base percentage of .451 while Mount St. Mary's hit .284... The Griffs had a team ERA on the weekend of 2.40... Reimer went 7-for-13 in the four games while Mailloux was 7-for-16 with five runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs while slugging 1.000... Donato scored six runs on the weekend... Canisius now has 11 innings of four runs or more this season...Donato has reached base in all 10 games he's played in this season while Reimer has reached base in all nine games he's played in... Mailloux has an eight-game hitting streak... Canisius has allowed four runs of fewer in five straight games and in eight of the team's 12 games this season...
