Game Two Box Score

Returning from an 11-day layoff, the Canisius College baseball team continued its impressive start to the 2008 season by sweeping Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader in Emmitsburg, Md. on Friday. The Griffs produced 20 runs on 20 hits to win the opening game 20-1 before taking the nightcap 4-3. The 9-1 start to the season stands as the best start in the last 54 seasons.

“I was concerned about the long layoff and with our team not being able to get on the field for a couple of weeks. I was happy with the way our team responded,” Canisius coach Mike McRae said. “We swung the bats well in game one. In game two, we showed the ability to win a tight game.”

In the first game, of the 15 Golden Griffins to have an at-bat, 13 had a hit, led by a 3-for-4 performance from junior shortstop Alec Cabello. Cabello and Adam Donato each scored three runs in the game as 12 Griffs scored at least one run and 10 had at least one RBI.

After each team scored in the first, the Griffs broke it open with six runs in the second inning, sending 10 batters to the plate. Five different players drove in runs in the inning, with Branson Joseph bringing home two-run single. Canisius added four in the fourth, three in the sixth and six more in the seventh, capped by a three-run home run from sophomore Perry Silverman.

On the mound, Alex MacKenzie went six innings, allowing seven hits, one run, walking two and striking out four. MacKenzie improves to 3-0 on the season, has an ERA of 1.69 and has allowed 21 baserunners in 21.1 innings pitched in 2008.

In the second game, Canisius scored in the first when Connor Burke reached on an error, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by Kevin Reimer. The Griffs added two more in the third when Joseph hit a solo home run, his second homer of the season and Reimer and Kevin Mailloux had back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0.

After Mount St. Mary's (0-9) scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, the Griffs responded with a run of their own in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2. Burke and Ian Choy led off the inning with singles and Joseph hit into a double play to move Burke to third. After a walk by Reimer, Mailloux reached on an error to score Burke.

Three Canisius pitchers teamed up for the victory as sophomore Mike Goemans pitched four innings of the seven-inning game to pick up his second win of the season. Junior Matt Weber allowed one run in two innings of relief while Ryan McGorman struck out two in the seventh to earn his second save of the season.

Due to weather concerns, the teams adjusted their schedules to play a doubleheader on Friday. Currently, they are set to play a single game on Saturday and single game on Sunday, but may adjust the schedule to a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch on Saturday is set for 12 p.m.

Game Notes:
MacKenzie has allowed 12 earned runs in his last 64 2/3 innings pitched for an ERA of 1.67... Weber allowed only his second run of the season in 9 2/3 innings of relief... Freshman Will Chomicki picked up his first collegiate hit in the first game against Mount St. Mary's... Choy has a hit in the last six games and only had one hit in the second game against Mount St. Mary's, ending his streak of games with two hits at five... Donato has reached base in all eight games this season... Mailloux has four doubles in the last three games and 11 hits in the last six... Reimer has nine hits in the last four games and 14 RBIs in the last six... Canisius has 10 innings of four runs or more this season... The four runs scored by the Griffs in game two marks the first time this season they haven't scored at least six in a game in 2008.
