JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Saint Peter's guard Wesley Jenkins matched a career-high
with 27 points after he knocked down a career-best seven 3-pointers to help
lift Saint Peter's to a 76-52 win over Canisius College Sunday afternoon in the
Yanitelli Center. The win improves the Peacocks to 2-5 on the year and 1-1 in
MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins have now dropped two straight and stand at
3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
For the game, the host Peacocks shot 49 percent (24-for-49)
from the field, with 11 of those makes coming from behind the 3-point arc.
Saint Peter's shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from long range, led by Jenkins,
who had five 3-pointers in the first half.
“When a team shoots like that from behind the 3-point line,
you have to play a perfect game in order to beat them,” Canisius head coach Tom
Parrotta said. “We've done it in the past to teams ? where you just shoots
lights out - and it really zaps a team when you defend and defend, only to have
a 24-foot shot go through the basket. Our defensively philosophy is to control
the inside and make teams beat us with contested shots from the outside. To
their credit, both teams we played this weekend were able to do that.”
For the Griffs, Frank Turner scored a team-high 10 points to
go with six rebounds and four assists in the loss. Greg Logins posted nine
points and six rebounds while Chris Gadley and Julius Coles added eight points
apiece in the loss.
Saint Peter's used an 11-0 run over 2:20 to break the game
open midway through the first half. During that run, which started with a
tip-in by Saint Peter's guard Nick Leon, Jenkins drained back-to-back
3-pointers, with the second one coming as the shot clock ticked under five
seconds. For the first half, the Peacocks shot 52 percent from the floor and
57.1 percent from 3-point land, while the Griffs shot 33.3 percent from the
field and 30.8 percent from behind the arc.
“They were scoring three points here and three points there,
and we were coming up with empty possession,” Parrotta said. “It's hard to win
on the road, but when a team shoots that high of a percentage from behind the
3-point line, it makes it that much more difficult.”
Canisius will return to action Saturday, Dec. 13, at Albany
in a return game of last year's ESPNU BracketBuster series. Tipoff in the state's
capital is set for 7 p.m.
Game Notes: This
was the first afternoon game of the season for the Griffs... Frank Turner played
in his 70th career game as a Griff on Sunday, which is every game under
Tom Parrotta... Turner's 10 points gives him 873 in his career, which ranks 37th
all-time in school history... Tomas Vazquez Simmons' block in the first half was
the 90th in his career and the 50th against a MAAC
opponent... Despite the loss, Canisius still leads the all-time series with Saint
Peter's by a 35-25 count.
