Worcester, Mass. ? The Canisius College scored a third-period goal to earn a 1-1 draw against Holy Cross on Friday night. The Griffs are now 1-1-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.

“I thought that Andrew Loewen played great,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “It wasn't a 1-1 game in terms of chances but both I thought that both goalies played really well.”

Sophomore Cory Conacher recorded the Griffs' lone goal of the evening, with junior Jason Weeks and freshman Wes Love each recording an assist. Junior Andrew Loewen stopped 42 shots in goal to remain unbeaten this season.

“I'm seeing the puck well right now,” Loewen said. “My defense is doing a good job clearing the rebounds and I'm just trying to have fun.”

The Crusaders (0-0-1) opened the scoring 9:14 into the contest when Marty Dams found the back of the net. Dewey Thompson crossed the puck to the senior and Dams fired it in to give Holy Cross the early advantage.

The Griffs finally knotted the game with 11 minutes remaining in the contest. Weeks lofted a shot toward the goal and Conacher was there to tip the puck in for his team-leading third score of the season.

Canisius had a number of chances to earn the victory. The Griffs couldn't convert in six power-play opportunities. Holy Cross' Adam Roy recorded 29 saves to earn the draw.

The two schools wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Canisius was not whistled for a single penalty during the game for the second time since moving to Division I (Nov. 16, 2007 vs. AIC) ... Loewen has recorded 92 saves in two games this season ... Holy Cross did not win its conference opener for the first time in Atlantic Hockey play.
