Women's Basketball Canisius College Athletics

Marist Defeats Women's Basketball

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ? Marist received 26 points in first half from Rachele Fitz and Julianne Viani en route to defeating the Canisius College women's basketball team 93-66 from the McCann Center Monday.

Junior Amanda Cavo led Canisius with 17 points, going a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Senior Laura Buetow had 15 points, setting a season-high for the second consecutive game and reaching double figures for the third straight game. Brittan? Russell had 10 points wile Micayla Drysdale had 12 points for the Griffs.

Canisius (8-10, 3-4 MAAC) scored the first seven points of the game ? getting a 3-pointer from Cavo along with baskets from Buetow and Russell in the opening 1:38. After a Marist timeout, the Red Foxes got back into the game from behind the arc, getting three 3-pointers from Viani during a stretch of four minutes to take a 17-16 lead at the 12:31 mark. Marist then broke the game open with a run of 17-4 to take a 37-22 lead capped by a 3-pointer and layup from Erica Allenspach.

Marist (17-2, 7-0) extended its lead in the second half, holding the Griffs scoreless for a stretch of 4:18 and scoring 13 straight points to take a 68-36 advantage. Canisius cut into the lead throughout the half, but could never get closer than 22.

“We let Marist make a couple of shots, allowing them to feel good about themselves. Then they started to get it going inside,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “Obviously, they are a very good team, but we had poor ball pressure and poor defensive intensity. Instead of coming to play, we came to watch today.”

Fitz, Viani and Allenspach each had 20 points in the game as Allenspach made all six of her field-goal attempts and all four attempts from the free throw line.

Canisius starts its weekend home series against Manhattan on Friday, at the Koessler Athletic Center on “Pack the House” night. Game time between the Griffs and Lady Jaspers is set for 7 p.m.
