Iona Muscles Past Women's Basketball

Box Score

Anna McLean had 11 points to go along with a game-high 20 rebounds to lead the Iona Gaels to a 65-45 victory over the Canisius College women's basketball team Saturday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center.

Senior Laura Buetow led Canisius (7-9, 2-3 MAAC) with 12 points and six rebounds. Micayla Drysdale and Ellie Radke each had 10 points for the Griffs, who shot 26.6 percent from the field

Iona (10-6, 4-1) took control of the game by scoring 10 consecutive points midway through the first half to turn a 15-14 lead into an 11-point advantage with 4:58 remaining in the first half. Four different Gaels scored during the run, as Tiara Headen and Anda Ivkovic each made 3-pointers during the stretch.

Canisius could never get closer than nine points the rest of the way as Iona controlled the boards. The Gaels outrebounded Canisius 61-29, which included 24 offensive boards. The 61 rebounds by Iona are the most by a Canisius opponent in the Koessler Athletic Center since Fairfield had 64 Feb. 19, 1995.

“Iona dominated us from the start today. They played physical, and we didn't have an answer,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We struggled to get looks from the outside and also weren't able to consistently get open looks inside.”

Headen had a game-high 15 points while Thazina Cook had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Gaels, who have won six straight.

Canisius wraps up its three-game homestand on Friday, when the Griffs host Niagara at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
