The Angola National Basketball team secured a spot in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing with an 86-72 victory over Cameroon Saturday afternoon in the finals of the 2007 FIBA Africa Championships. Eduardo Mingas led all Angola players with 18 points as the host Angola squad secured its fifth-straight title with the win.
Lazare Adingono, an assistant coach with the Canisius men's basketball team and head coach of the Cameroon National Basketball team, coached his home country to a silver medal after the team went 5-1 in the tournament. The silver medal is the first national basketball honor for Cameroon as the country made its second appearance in a medal game, with Saturday's contest serving as the nation's first chance to win a medal since Cameroon played for the bronze medal in the 1974 event.
Three Cameroon players scored in double figures in the losing effort, led by Brice Vounang's 18 points and 10 rebounds. Cameroon trailed by one at 35-34 with 9:24 left to play in the third quarter before Angola ripped off a 10-0 run over a span of 1:29 to pull away. The championship was Angola's ninth since 1989.
