Women's Basketball Rallies Past UMES

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. ? The Canisius College women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat Maryland Eastern Shore 70-60 in the W.P. Hytche Center Saturday afternoon. The 14-point halftime deficit stands as the biggest halftime deficit overcome by the Golden Griffins to win a game at the Division I era.

Amanda Cavo led Canisius (5-7) with 17 points while Brittan? Russell had 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Ellie Radke had 13 points, her fourth straight game in double figures, in a career-high 31 minutes off the bench.

The Griffs fell behind early for the third straight game as UMES (4-5) tallied the first six points of the contest. Canisius made it 12-10 on a 3-pointer by Cavo, but the Hawks responded with a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 22-12 and went into the locker room with a 40-26 advantage.

Canisius opened the second half with a 17-2 run in the first five minutes of the half, taking a 43-42 lead on a jumper by Cavo. With the score tied at 47-37, the Griffs broke the game open with a run of 14-1, getting five points from Russell, four from Laura Buetow and three from Radke along with a jumper by Brianna Lucas.

The Griffs held the Hawks to eight points in first 16 minutes of the second half and 21.9 percent shooting from the field during the half.

“That victory shows our team has a lot of courage. Being down 14 at the half and having lost the last four games is a major gut check,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We weren't hitting shots in the first half and weren't boxing out, but our team responded with our best half of the season.”

April McBride had a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds while Brittany Adkins had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Canisius returns home to finish its non-conference schedule on Wednesday. The Griffs host Rhode Island in the Koessler Athletic Center at 7 p.m.
