van Ingen Takes Fifth at Disney X-Country Classic

The Canisius College cross country program had a strong showing on Saturday at the Disney Cross Country Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The men's team finished eighth out of 45 teams while the women's team placed 10th out of 49 competing teams.

Canisius freshman Erik van Ingen finished fifth out of 327 runners with a time of 25:28. Van Ingen's time was the best for a Canisius runner since 2000. Saturday's race was just the second career start for the freshman.

Sophomore Matt Butters placed 19th overall with a time of 26:15. Vasilis Kariolis ran a personal best time of 26:47 which placed him 37th. Christian Volk (27:53), Chris Castleman (28:06) and Brett Finnan (28:26) finished 90th 100th and 115th respectively. Rounding out the field for the Griffs was Justin Weldon who finished 152nd overall with a time of 29:02.

On the women's side Samantha Garnet ran the fastest time for a Canisius runner on any course since 1997. Garnet placed 36th overall with a time of 19:06 which was a career best for the sophomore.

Junior Alex Brown ran a time of 19:24 which placed her 44th overall. Freshman Maura Frauenhofer recorded a personal-best time of 19:27 to place 47th overall. Junior Precious Peoples finished 84th overall with a time of 20:02. Jess Nowak (20:21), Chelsea Fitzgerald (21:14) and Ellen Duane (21:22) finished 100th, 163rd and 171st respectively.

Canisius College assistant coach Aileen Hoak ran the event unattached and finished ninth overall with a time of 18:18.

The Golden Griffins return to the trails Oct. 13 at the Albany Invitational in Albany, N.Y.
