Van Ingen Takes Ninth at Albany Invitational

The Canisius College cross country program competed at the 41st Annual University of Albany Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning. The men's race took place on an 8K course while the women ran on a 5K track. The men's team took 10th place while the women's team finished 11th.

Leading the way for the men's squad was freshman Erik van Ingen with a time 25:21, which placed him ninth overall. Sophomore Matt Butters also ran a strong race. Butters finished 13th overall with a time of 25:36 which is a career-best time.

Junior Chris Castleman finished 71st with a time of 26:59 while senior Christian Volk finished 72nd with a time of 27:00. Vasilis Kariolis (27:24), Justin Weldon (28:14) and Brett Finnan (28:23) finished 92nd, 118th and 124th respectively. Freshman Sean Balkin finished 163rd with a time of 29:09

On the women's side, five Golden Griffins recorded career-best times. Junior Alex Brown was the highest finisher for the Griffs with a time of 18:39 and placed 34th. Brown's time of 18:39 was a career-best time. Sophomore Samantha Garnet ran a career-best time of 18:58 which placed her 56th. Freshman Maura Frauenhofer also recorded a career-best time of 19:08, placing 63rd. Junior Precious Peoples finished 81st with a time of 19:31, also a career-best time. Jess Nowak finished 97th overall with a career-best time of 20:05. Ellen Duane finished with a time of 20:23 placing 119th. Chelsea Fitzgerald rounded out the field for the Griffs with a time of 20:24 to finish 137th overall.

In the Gold Race, Lauren Mariacher finished 42nd with a time of 21:03. Jessica Bell finished with a time of 24:02 and placed 79th.

The Griffs have a week off before the MAAC Championships at Van Cortland Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
