Golf in Fourth at JetBlue Airways MAAC Championships


The Canisius College golf team is in fourth place after the first day of the JetBlue Airways MAAC Championships at the Magnolia Golf Course in Walt Disney World. The Griffs recorded an 18-hole total of 316 and are 10 shots out of first.

Junior Brandon Dziura (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) led the team with a 76 and is in a tie for fourth while sophomore Jeff Manza (Naperville, Ill.) is tied for ninth with an opening-round 78. Freshman Evan Smith (East Amherst, N.Y.) is in a tie for 15th with a 79.

Junior Corey Lindner (Tonawanda, N.Y.) is in 29th with an 83 while senior Jeff Bagley (Kenmore, N.Y.) shot an 84.

The fourth-place start is the best for the Blue and Gold since 2003 when the team was in second after the first day. That year the Griffs finished the tournament in a tie for fourth.

Siena leads the tournament after compiling a 306. Iona is in second with a 310 and Loyola is in third with a 311. Rider sits in fifth with a 317. Fairfield is in sixth with a 319.

The 54-hole tournament continues throughout the weekend with 18 holes scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
