Jones, a 21-year-old junior forward, collapsed during an individual workout and later died at an area hospital. According to the Erie County Coroner, the cause of death was a genetically enlarged heart (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy).

Jones played in 88 career games and made 47 starts for the Griffs as a three-year letterwinner. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 5.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while dishing out 142 career assists. Jones scored a career-high 15 points in the team's loss to Liberty Nov. 26, in the Great Alaska Shootout, then tied that mark with a 15-point effort at home against the College of Charleston Dec. 18.

He averaged 6.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in his junior campaign. He played in all 30 games and shot a career-best 43.3 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point land.
