Canisius Selects Seven to Join Sports Hall of Fame

Canisius College has selected six former student-athletes and one former coach to induct into its Sports Hall of Fame. The seven new members are: Michelle Corrigan '94, softball; Randy Mearns '92, men's lacrosse; Daniel Mullins '88, cross-country/track; Jason Rausch '93, baseball; Cindy Ulreich Reinhard '89, women's basketball/softball; Amy Vredenburgh '94, softball; and former football coach Thomas Hersey MS '69.

The ceremonies for the Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, February 5, during halftime of the Golden Griffins' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's basketball contest versus Siena, which tips off at 2 p.m. A pre-game reception will be held in the Patrick Lee Center. To be eligible for the Canisius College Hall of Fame, a student-athlete must have completed his/her eligibility 10 years prior to induction, be a graduate of the college, been acclaimed as an undergraduate as one of the outstanding athletes in the history of the college and, since graduation, the athlete's life must have continued to reflect favorably on the college. Non-athletes may be inducted if they have made outstanding contributions to Canisius College athletics.

The addition of seven new members brings the total number of members of the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame to 139.
Michelle Corrigan ?94 ? A four-year letterwinner in softball, Michelle Corrigan was a dominant pitcher for Canisius. A first-team All-MAAC selection in 1993 and 1994 and a regional All-American in 1993, Corrigan holds the Canisius single-season record for complete games with 20 in 1992. Corrigan's name is firmly entrenched in the Canisius record book; she holds several career records, including complete games (74), ERA (0.84), shutouts (31), starts (88), wins (74), innings (568) and strikeouts (515). She was also a member of the 1993 team that set an NCAA record with a 35-game winning streak and led the team to an NCAA tournament appearance in 1994.

Randy Mearns '92 ? A three-year letterwinner in men's lacrosse, Randy Mearns was a member of the first Canisius College lacrosse team in 1990. Mearns set the single-season Canisius record for points (94) and assists (49) in 1990. After completing his degree at Canisius, Mearns went on to an 11-year professional career with the Buffalo Bandits and Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League, winning two world championships (Buffalo, 1993 and Rochester, 1997) and was selected the MVP of the 1999 NLL All-Star Game. Mearns is currently entering his seventh season as the head coach of the Canisius men's lacrosse team.

Daniel Mullins '88 ? A four-year letterwinner in cross country/track, Daniel Mullins was a member of the 1985-86 distance medley relay team, which set a school record of 10:19.20. Mullins was named team MVP in 1984. Despite missing the 1986 season due to injury, he made a triumphant return to action in 1987, placing first at the Colgate and Allegheny meets. Mullins represented Canisius three times at the NCAA Regionals and four times at the National Catholic Championships.

Jason Rausch ?93 ? A four-year letterwinner in baseball, Jason Rausch ranks first in Canisius career home runs (27), second in career RBIs (85) and third in career batting average (.374). Rausch was twice named to the All-MAAC team (1991 and 1993) and is the only three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in school history.

Cindy Ulreich Reinhard ?89 ? A four-year letterwinner in basketball and a two-year letterwinner in softball, Cindy Ulreich Reinhard ranks first in Canisius career field goal percentage (.530), second in career blocks (193), third in career rebounds (798), sixth in career steals (200) and ninth in career scoring (1,180). Ulreich Reinhard holds the school's single-game mark for field goal percentage by shooting 7-for-7 from the floor vs. Siena in 1988.

Amy Vredenburgh '94 ? A four-year letterwinner in softball, Amy Vredenburgh caught 10 no-hitters during her career as a catcher, including five for fellow Sports Hall of Fame inductee Michelle Corrigan. An All-MAAC first-team selection in 1994, Vredenburgh is fourth all-time in steals (20), second all-time in picking off runners (16), eighth in career fielding percentage (.973) and was a member of the 1993 and 1994 MAAC regular season and tournament championship teams. Vredenburgh also helped Canisius reach their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1994.

Thomas Hersey MS '69 ? Thomas Hersey served as head football coach for Canisius College for nine seasons and finished with a career record of 49-42-2. The winningest coach in Canisius history, Hersey coached the Griffs in 1983 to score a victory 17-7 at Dayton. It was the Flyers' first ever loss at Welcome Stadium and is one of just 33 in the 31-year history of the facility. Hersey still serves as the Director of Student Retention at Canisius.
