Volleyball falls in three sets to Niagara

The Canisius College volleyball team dropped three straight games to conference-rival Niagara on Saturday night, 30-23, 31-29, 30-25. The loss drops Canisius to 2-9 overall, 0-1 in the MAAC. The win moves Niagara to 5-6 overall, 1-0 in the MAAC. This was the second time in the last three weeks that the Purple Eagles have beaten the Griffs in volleyball.


Freshman Kim Hoffman (West Babylon, N.Y.) collected a game-high 16 kills, while adding a game-high 13 digs. Fellow freshman Christina Wildes (Long Beach, N.Y.) was credited with 14 kills and eight digs in the losing effort. Junior setter Kelly Sieber (Depew, N.Y.) led the Griffs with 32 of the team's 35 assists. She also had seven digs and two service aces.

Junior Jennifer Debee (Boca Raton, Fla.) added eight kills for the Blue and Gold, while sophomore Nicole Lucie (Lancaster, N.Y.) had nine digs.


The Purple Eagles had three players with double-digit numbers in kills, led by senior Vanessa Gerbetz who collected 14 kills. Niagara's junior setter Laurie Haefner was credited with a game-high 40 assists.

Canisius will be back in action Oct. 19-21, with three road matches. The Griffs will play Binghamton on Oct. 19, then travel to MAAC rival Siena and Marist next Saturday and Sunday.
