Buteau Named AHA Rookie of the Week

Canisius freshman defenseman FJ Buteau has been chosen as the Atlantic Hockey America's Rookie of the Week, league officials announced on Tuesday.

The announced marked the second consecutive week that the Montreal native has been recognized after he was named the league's Defenseman of the Week on Jan. 20.

Buteau extended his point-scoring streak to four games as he recorded a goal and two assists in the Golden Griffins' sweep of longtime rival Mercyhurst on the road last weekend. He opened the series with an assist on the game-tying goal in Canisius' 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Lakers in the opener. Buteau followed that effort with his third multiple-point game of the season, notching the game-winning goal and adding an assist in a 5-0 triumph.

The first-year rearguard leads the Canisius blueline in scoring with 12 points (4g-8a), half of which has come during his current four-game scoring streak (2g-4a).

Winners of its last five games, Canisius (13-9-2, 8-6-2 AHA) returns to action this weekend with a home-and-home series against Battle of the Bridge foe Niagara. The series opener is scheduled for LECOM Harborcenter before the series shifts to Dwyer Arena the following evening for the finale. Puck drop for both contests is slated for 7 p.m.
