Hockey Stretches Winning Streak to Five with Shutout at Mercyhurst

Senior Walter Zacher scored two goals and senior Chase Clark stopped all 20 shots he faced to pace Canisius in a 5-0 victory over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey America action Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Freshman FJ Buteau and seniors Killian Kiecker-Olson and Alton McDermott also scored for the Golden Griffins (12-9-2, 7-6-2 AHA), who completed a weekend sweep of their longtime rivals to extend their winning streak to five games.

Charles-Edward Gravel turned aside 26 shots in goal for the Lakers (3-20-1, 3-12-1 AHA).

Buteau opened the scoring at the 12:58 mark of the first period with a power-play goal, firing a loose puck past the blocker of Gravel from the middle of the slot for his fourth goal of the campaign.
Canisius struck for the second time on the power play as Zacher doubled the Canisius advantage near the midway point of the second, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with a shot over the glove of Gravel from the middle of the slot. Zacher notched his second goal of the period with 14:09 elapsed in the middle frame to expand the Griffs advantage to 3-0, depositing a loose puck into the Lakers goal after the initial shot attempt from senior defenseman Jack Pascucci hit traffic in front of the net. Canisius scored twice during a 94-second span during the later stages of the third to close out the victory. Kiecker-Olson notched an empty goal with 14:06 played in the final frame before McDermott tallied the Griffs third power-play goal of the contest with just over four minutes to play to close out the contest.
