Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Strikes Twice Late to Stun Mercyhurst

Canisius scored twice in a 23-second span late in the third period to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat Mercyhurst, 4-3, in Atlantic Hockey America action Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Junior Walter Zacher netted the equalizer and sophomore Hunter Price recorded the game-winning goal for the Golden Griffins (12-9-2, 7-6-2 AHA), who extended their winning streak to four games. Seniors Hunter Andrew and Grant Porter scored in the first period while senior Chase Clark finished with 15 saves.

Will Schumacher, Andrew LeBlanc and Brendan Lamb accounted for the three goals for the Lakers (3-19-1, 3-11-1 AHA). Charles-Edward Gravel posted 28 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Trailing 3-2 after Lamb gave Mercyhurst its first lead of the game midway through the third period, Canisius pulled the goalie and was rewarded when Zacher tied the game with 2:25 to play as he beat Gravel to the blocker side from the middle of the slot for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Price restored the Griffs lead on the next shift, getting a piece of senior Robert Kincaid's point shot to put Canisius back in front, 4-3. Earlier in the contest, Andrew opened the scoring at the 12:35 mark of the opening frame, depositing freshman Kyan Haldenby's centering pass past Gravel for his fourth goal of the season. Porter doubled the Canisius advantage with less than three minutes to play in the first, outworking a Mercyhurst defender before sliding the puck past Gravel to make it a 2-0 contest. Schumacher got the Lakers on the board less than 90 seconds after Porter's tally, firing a wrist shot past the blocker of Clark while on the rush to trim the Griffs lead to 2-1.

LeBlanc brought Mercyhurst level during the middle stages of the second, wiring a wrist shot over the blocker of Clark from the middle of the slot to tie the game at 2-2, setting the scene for the Griffs' late-game comeback.
