Somers, Sundberg Chosen as Student-Athletes of the Month for October

Canisius men's swimming and diving junior Elliot Somers and women's cross country sophomore Clara Sundberg have been selected as the Milk for Life Canisius Student-Athletes of the Month for September, the athletic department announced on Thursday.

Somers has gotten off to a solid start to his junior campaign, winning four individual events through the first three meets of the 2025-26 season. The Evergreen, Colo., product claimed the 100 back in the season-opening dual meet at Marist on Oct. 11 before winning the 200 free in a meet against the University of Rochester on Oct. 18. Somers closed out the opening month of the season by securing a sweep of the 100 and 200 back against SUNY Geneseo on Oct. 24.

A psychology major at Canisius, Somers was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team in 2025.

A native of Apple Creek, Ohio, Sundberg has led the way for the Griffs this season. Sundberg paced the Golden Griffins in the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh on Oct. 3 with a 157th-place finish in a field of over 300 runners. Sundberg also turned in a 39th-place finish at the Canisius Alumni Classic at Delaware Park on Oct. 18.

A special education major at Canisius, Sundberg earned MAAC All-Academic honors for the 2025 season.

The spring 2025 semester saw all 20 of Canisius' varsity intercollegiate athletic programs posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 or higher. A total of 18 programs recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher, while the school's 401 active student-athletes combined to post a cumulative GPA of 3.46 for the term.

The previous semester also saw a total of 64 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The 64 student-athletes highlighted a group of 354 student-athletes to post a term GPA of 3.0 or higher, representing 88.0 percent of the University's student-athlete population.

In May, the NCAA announced that all 20 Canisius varsity athletic programs were in good academic standing while 13 teams posted perfect single-year scores in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics.

In all, 19 of Canisius' 20 varsity intercollegiate athletic teams scored 970 or better out of a possible 1,000 points.
