Baseball Falls in Pitchers Duel to Marist

Junior Peyton Consigli's impressive 7.0 inning, two run performance was spoiled by the Marist pitching staff, who held the Canisius bats at bay to claim the 2-1 victory Friday in collegiate baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Consigli took the loss for the Golden Griffins (11-23, 5-8 MAAC) despite fanning eight batters and allowing only two walks in a quality 104 pitch performance. The Red Foxes (15-25, 8-8 MAAC) starter, Tyler Hartley earned the win with a 5.0 inning, seven strikeout performance of his own. Hartley held the Griffs scoreless allowing five hits and walking one batter.

The Griffs out hit Marist in the contest, tallying eight hits to the Red Fox's five. Freshman Michael Kelly drove in the only runner of the ball game for Canisius, a ninth inning pinch hit single that drove in sophomore Andrew Marcello.

Both starting pitchers began the game on point, mowing down the opposing lineups. Both Consigli and Hartley amassed five strikeouts by the fourth inning. The scoreless deadlock was broken in the fourth by Marist's Bayram Hot, who homered to left field.

Marist tacked on another run in the seventh inning on a Dylan Millman RBI single to put the Griffs in a 2-0 hole.

Each team's relief pitchers were excellent as well, with Marist's Jack Wren holding the Griffs to one run over 4.0 innings and graduate Tom Peltier throwing 2.0 perfect innings to hold the Red Foxes in place while the offense looked to rally.

In the ninth, junior Tyler Hoover was called upon to pinch hit for the Griffs and drew a lead-off walk. Marcello pinch ran for him and advanced to second with a single from sophomore Tommy Sheridan. From there, Kelly was able to drive a ball into right field to score Marcello and cut the lead to one run.

The Griffs loaded the bases on a single from freshman JC Spinosa but were unable to tie the game as Wren induced a force out at home plate and struckout the final batter to win the game 2-1.

Game Notes:
•The 2-1 score marked the lowest scoring game of the season for Canisius
•Consigli surpassed his previous career-high single-season strikeout total of 53. He now has 57 on the season after striking out eight today
