Mead Breaks Pool Record, Swimming and Diving Suffers Defeat at SUNY Geneseo

Freshman Daphne Mead set a pool record in the women's 200 backstroke and took first place in all three of her individual races as Canisius suffered a setback against SUNY Geneseo in collegiate swimming and diving action at Alumni Pool in Geneseo, N.Y. 

The Knights took the victory over the Golden Griffins on both men's and women's sides of the meet, earning a 154 -137 win for the men and a 160-139 victory in the women's event.

Mead continued her torrid start in her rookie swimming campaign, taking first in the 100 backstroke (59.85), 200 IM (2:08.55) and breaking the Alumni Pool record in the 200 backstroke (2:06.41). Mead has won the majority of her races this season with seven first place finishes and four other podium finishes.

The trio of sophomore Andi Mackey, junior Emily Blake and senior Ashley Allaire swept the podium in the 200 freestyle. Mackey came out on top with a time of 1:59.72, followed by Blake in second place (2:00.76) and Allaire in third (2:00.87). Allaire took home an individual victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:24.86.

The women's team continued their string of podium sweeps in the 200 breaststroke as sophomore SaraJo Gardner took first (2:29.0), followed by sophomore Cassandra Ercoli (2:34.29) and Tori Spacciapolli (2:34.39), respectively.

On the men's side, sophomore Elliot Somers and junior Halsted Barton each took a pair of individual wins. Barton took first in both men's distance races with a 10:07.78 in the 1000 freestyle and a 4:53.66 in the 500 free. Somers was the winner in the 100 backstroke (52.21) and 200 backstroke (1:55.21)

Seniors Toby Mayfield and Sam Vidal also took home a pair of podium finishes as Mayfield took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:45.70). He was followed closely by Vidal, who finished second with a time of 1:46.89. Vidal took home first prize in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.55) while Mayfield took third in the 100 free (48.01)

UP NEXT
The Griffs return to downtown Buffalo on Nov. 2 to face regional foe Binghamton in a dual-meet. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Burt Flickinger Center.
