Swimming and Diving Falls to Marist in Home Opener

Freshman Daphne Mead took home first place finishes in all four of her races Friday as Canisius fell to Marist in collegiate swimming and diving action at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.

On the women's side, Marist defeated the Golden Griffins by a score of 170-124, while the men's team suffered a 154-117 setback to the Red Foxes.

Mead was the standout among the women's team, taking first place in the 100 yard backstroke (58.74), 200 backstroke (2:08.23) and 200 IM (2:08.23). The rookie also swam the first leg of the 200 yard medley relay, finishing first along with sophomores Evie Leighton, Cassandra Ercoli and junior Hannah Brainard (1:48.19).

Leighton had her share of success in the individual races, placing first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.99. Leighton is the reigning MAAC champion in this event.

Canisius record holder, senior Sam Vidal, continued to show his prowess in the 200 yard breaststroke, taking the top spot with a time of 2:07.74.

Sophomore Elliot Somers started his 2024-25 season with successful showings in the men's backstroke events. He took second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.49 and won the 100 back with a time of 51.10.

Other notable times came from seniors Toby Mayfield (50.85) and Bronson Benes (50.93) who placed first and second, respectively in the 100 yard butterfly. Senior Jeremy Cox took home first prize in the 100 breaststroke with a time 58.57.

The Griffs will return to the pool Oct. 19, when the Blue and Gold plays host Bowling Green, Rochester and Siena at the Flickinger Center. Action is set to start at 11 a.m.
