Nicole Rivait Named to Canadian Women’s National Softball Team Roster

Softball Canada announced today that former Canisius infielder Nicole Rivait has been named to the Canadian Women's National Team roster that will compete at the 2023 WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Group Stage from July 22-26 in Castions di Strada and Buttrio, Italy.

Rivait, a native of Oakville, Ontario, started 44 games for the Golden Griffins in the 2023 season as she worked toward her master's degree as a graduate student. She ranked fourth on the team with her .338 batting average, where she collected 46 hits, including five doubles, five home runs and a triple to go with 29 runs batted in and 25 runs scored. Defensively, she ranked second on the roster with her 206 total defensive chances and 177 putouts as the team's primary first baseman. Rivait is one of 16 players on the Team Canada roster, and she is one of seven newcomers to this year's squad.

Rivait was part of the 2023 Canisius softball team went 30-16-1 overall and 17-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play en route to the program's 16th MAAC regular season championship. The 17 wins in league play bested the program record for MAAC wins in a season (16 in 2022), as the Griffs defeated all 10 MAAC teams at least one time during the 2023 campaign.

The Team Canada coaching staff made their selections after holding three regional identification camps and one final selection camp. Canada is currently ranked fifth in the WBSC Women's Softball World Rankings and qualified for the WBSC World Cup Group Stage and the 2023 Pan American Games with a silver-medal performance at the 2022 WBSC Pan American Championship held November 12-19 in Guatemala City.

The 2023 WBSC Women's Softball World Cup will be the first tournament staged under the new two-stage format. A total of 18 teams have been split into three groups, with the top two teams in each group's final standing advancing to the Finals that will be held in 2024 in Italy. The two remaining spots will be awarded to wild card entries and/or the host.

Canada will be in Group C, accompanied by No. 2 Japan, No. 8 Italy, No.22 Venezuela, No. 26 Philippines, and No. 28 New Zealand. Live scoring will be available through the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup website, with live streaming available through GameTime.sport. Canada's first game in the 2023 WBSC Women's World Cup will be July 22 when the team takes on the Philippines.
