Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits with Edinboro

Canisius junior Alyssa Onyeagwa went 3-for-3 with a home run and six RBI to help lead the Golden Griffins to a 10-4 victory over Edinboro in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

In the second game, Edinboro's Lucy Higley went 2-for-4 with a homer and four runs batted in to help lead the visiting Fighting Scots to a 6-2 victory. Canisius' record moved to 13-23 with the split, while Edinboro's record is now 5-33 on the season.

GAME ONE RECAP
Canisius scored four runs in the home half of the first and never looked back, as the Griffs posted the 10-4 victory in the day's first contest. Sophomore Grace Walker and freshman Abbey Post each had an RBI-single in the first inning, and Onyeagwa drove in a pair to make the score 4-0 for the home team with a single through the left side, the first of her three hits in the game one victory.

In the third, Onyeagwa pushed the Griffs' lead to 5-0 with an RBI-single to left, and she later scored a sac-fly to right off the bat of freshman teammate Maddy Hans. Leading 7-1 in the fourth, Onyeagwa put the Blue and Gold up 10-1 thanks to a three-run home run over the fence in left. That home run was her third of the season.

Edinboro was able to hold off the mercy-rule ending by scoring three times in the fifth, but the Fighting Scots were held scoreless the rest of the way. Sophomore starter Taylor McManus earned her first career win in the circle after she allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits in 5.0 innings of work. Junior Olivia Manchester closed out the contest by tossing two innings of scoreless relief, where she gave up a hit and struck out a pair.

Canisius banged out 11 hits in the game one victory, as Onyeagwa, Post, Walker and freshman Michaela Sycalik all recorded multi-hit performances in the win. The Griffs also stole a season-high four bases in the game, led by Walker, who swiped two bags. Juniors Ella Johel and Mia Martin also recorded stolen bases in the game.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the nightcap, Edinboro's Lucy Higley's RBI-single to right with one out in the third drove in a pair of runs and helped put the Fighting Scots up 3-1. In the fourth, Canisius senior Sofia Escoto singled to center to drive in Johel to make the game a one-run affair at 3-2, but a sac-fly by Higley with two outs in the fifth gave Edinboro the lead at 4-2.

In the seventh, Edinboro tacked on two insurance runs to make the score 6-2. Emalie Thomas drove in Edinboro's fifth run, and later in the frame, Higley hit a solo homer off the top of the fence in centerfield to cap the evening's scoring.

Edinboro pitcher Grace Kesslel went the distance and scattered eight hits while allowing two runs to go with four strikeouts for the win in the circle. Escoto and Hans each had a pair of hits in the game two loss, while Johel finished the second game by going 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

• Walker has posted multiple hits in two of the team's last five games, dating back to April 17 at Rider.
