Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits MAAC Doubleheader at Rider

An RBI-single in the ninth by freshman Talia Yermian in the top of the ninth and two scoreless innings of relief in the circle from junior Liv Herrington helped lift Canisius to a 2-1 win over Rider in extra-innings in the first game of a MAAC softball doubleheader Saturday at Herb and Joan Young Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

In the second game, Rider broke open a 1-0 game with a six-run fifth inning en route to a 7-3 victory. The Golden Griffins moved to 12-22 overall and 8-12 in conference games with the split, while Rider saw its record move to 22-19 overall and 12-9 in league play.

GAME ONE RECAP
With one out in the top of the ninth, and the score tied at 1-1, senior Sofia Escoto singled and then sophomore Grace Walker doubled to give the Griffs runners at second and third base. Yermian followed Walker's double with a base hit to right, which allowed Escoto to score the eventual game-winning run.

Herrington retired the Broncs in order in the home-half of the ninth to secure the victory for the Griffs, the team's fifth one-run win of the season. Herrington improved her record to 1-2 on the season after she threw two scoreless innings in relief, where she also registered a pair of strikeouts.

Escoto went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the win for the Blue and Gold, while Walker and freshman Maddy Hans also posted doubles in the victory. Hans went 1-for-3 with that double and she also scored the Griffs' first run of the game, which came in the game's first inning thanks to a throwing error by Rider on a pick-off play.

GAME TWO RECAP
After scoring the game's only run on a wild pitch in the third inning, Rider scored six times in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead late in the second game of the MAAC doubleheader. Canisius scored three times in the top of the seventh after freshman Mia Preuhs recorded an RBI-single and junior Rebecca Hai drove in a pair of runs with a base hit to left.

Rider pitcher Gabi Rodriguez earned her second win of the series in the circle after she went the distance and allowed three runs on six hits to go with a strikeout. Canisius starter Mikaila Obenrader took the loss for Canisius after she gave up six runs, three earned, on five hits in 4.2 innings of work. She also fanned four Rider hitters.

Freshman Avyree Sherman recorded a double in the losing cause for the Griffs and Escoto had a triple for the Blue and Gold, her first career three-base hit.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Rider 44-24.

• Walker has now reached base safely in six-straight games, as well.
• Hai's two RBI in the second game marks her second multi-RBI game of the season.
