Minto Becomes MAAC Champion on Third Day of Swimming and Diving Championships

For the second straight night, Canisius had five top-three finishes as Archie Minto became MAAC Champion in the 100 fly on day three of the 2023 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center Pool in downtown Buffalo.

In total, the Golden Griffins broke four more program records Friday night, giving them a total of nine new records during the conference championships.

Minto was crowned MAAC Champion for the second straight year after touching the wall at 48.50 in the men's 100 fly. During his freshman campaign, the Burley in Wharfedale, England, native earned first place in the men's 200 fly with a time of 51.61.

Fellow sophomore Bronson Benes also placed in the top-three in the men's 100 fly on Friday, earning bronze with a time of 48.93.

Graduate student Liam O'Connell claimed fourth place in the men's 200 free, swimming to a time of 1:38.42, which bests his program record time of 1:39.98 from the 2021-22 campaign.

The men capped off the evening with a program-best 3:20.57 in the 400 medley relay. Minto, freshman Samuel Vidal, Benes and O'Connell topped the 2017-18 time of 3:20.61, which featured current assistant coach Greg Staebell.

On the women's side, sophomore Ashley Allaire and freshman Lana Janson both earned silver in their respective events.

Allaire swam a 1:53.41 in the women's 200 free while Janson touched the wall at 1:03.59 in the women's 100 breast, topping her 1:04.30 from earlier in the year.

Like Janson, junior Jordan O'Connor bested her previous time in the 100 back, swimming a 56.91, which was good for bronze.

Both the men's and women's teams still sit in fifth place after three days of action. The men have a score of 288 while the women have accumulated 251 points thus far.
