Earlier in the contest, with the score tied 9-all at the midway point of the first quarter, Canisius used a quick 4-0 spurt to take a 13-9 lead with four minutes to play in the first quarter.

The Stags would respond with a 6-2 stretch of their own, sparked by back-to-back baskets from Rubino, to take their first lead of the game, 16-15, with 1:39 to play in the first quarter. The Griffs answered back, tallying the final five points of the opening frame, punctuated by an uncontested layup from Adrien LaMora at the buzzer, to give Canisius a 19-16 edge after ten minutes.

Canisius continued its hot shooting form at the start of the second quarter, hitting a pair of shots in the opening 53 seconds of the half to expand its lead to 23-16 with 9:07 left before the half.

Fairfield would find its footing over the next 3:46, cutting the Canisius advantage to just one, 28-27, with 5:27 to play. Cavanaugh led the run for the Stags, scoring six of their 11 points. The teams exchagned baskets for the remainder the quarter before Garrelts closed out the first half by hitting a shot from beyond the arc just before the buzzer to give Canisius a two-possession lead, 37-32, at the break.

The third quarter saw Canisius and Fairfield  go basket-for-basket for a majority of the frame before a late layup by Fairfield's Nicoletti-Leiti capped off a 5-0 run from the Stags that put them in the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 49-48, entering the final stanza.

After an early jumper by Stubbs put Canisius back on top, the Stags would hit back-to-back shots to take a 53-50 lead. Canisius regained the lead moments later, using a layup from Sisi Eleko and a 3-pointer from Garrelts, to jump back in front, 55-53, setting the stage for the Stags' decisive run.
