Finalists Announced for 2021-22 Male Athlete of the Year

The finalists for the 2021-22 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year award are now online. Fans are encouraged to vote for their favorite finalist through 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 14. The winner will be announced on Friday, July 15.
 
This year's finalists are:
 
Tom Appenheimer – Cross Country/Track
• Claimed second place in the 8k at the Canisius Alumni Classic (Oct. 16)
• Posted an 11th-place finish in the 8k at the MAAC Cross Country Championships, earning All-MAAC accolades (Oct. 30)
• Placed second in the 3000 at the Highlander Invitational with a time of 8:43.81 (Jan. 22)
• Recorded a first-place result in the 5000 at the UB Team Invitational, crossing the finish line in 14:40.32 (April 23)
• Finished in fourth place in the 10000 at the MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 7)
• Earned All-East honors at the IC4A Outdoor Championships, finishing in fifth place in the 10000 (May 15)
• Named to MAAC Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track All-Academic Teams
 
Jacob Barczewski – Hockey
• All-AHA First Team selection
• Team MVP and Three Stars Award recipient for second consecutive season
• Four-time Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week selection (Nov. 8, Nov. 15, Jan. 10, Jan. 17)
• Named Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month for November after posting a 5-3-0 record with a 2.70 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in his eight appearances
• Started 29 games between the pipes, recording 13 wins, a .923 save percentage and a 2.42 goals against average
• Averaged 27.1 saves per game, highlighted by four outings in which he recorded 40 or more stops
 
Mike Donner – Men's Golf
• Earned All-MAAC honors after tying for fifth at the 2022 MAAC Golf Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
• His three-round score of 219 at the MAAC Golf Championship set a new career-low for a 54-hole event.
• Posted a career-low 147 for two rounds at the 2021 Little Three Championship, where he finished eighth in the field.
• Finished first or second among Canisius golfers in six of the eight events he played in
• His 75.2 stroke average ranked second-best on the 2021-22 team roster.

Max Grant – Baseball
• Named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Second Team All-American
• 2022 MAAC Player of the Year and All-MAAC First Team selection
• Named to MAAC All-Championship Team after hitting .440 (10-of-18) with 6 RBI during four tournament games
• One of two players to start all 54 games played this season
• Leads the MAAC and ranks 10th nationally with a .398 batting average
• Paced league with 90 hits and 1.67 hits per game
• Recorded multiple hits in 27 games played, highlighted by six four-hit performances
• Led the MAAC and ranked ninth nationally with six triples
